Lately the hops bine in our backyard has been bursting with ladybug larvae, which the children call “ladybug caterpillars.” There has been much interest and amusement with these tiny creatures living in our backyard. Here are some reflections from today.
The children have made the connection between the life cycle of the butterfly, and the life cycle of the ladybug.
C: A ladybug caterpillar.
Z: It will make a cocoon around its body and then it will grow and come out into a ladybug like this. [Runs to the door. Points at ladybug] Like this.”
Z: Be really, really gentle with it. It’s so fragile.
L: Maybe it will go in my sleeve.
