Veggies, Flowers and Bees

By Laura

We had a lovely city bus field trip to the BUFA farm today. Farmer Jen gave us a tour, she created a scavenger hunt for small groups and the children had a chance to harvest carrots and potatoes! They washed and ate the carrots on the spot and carefully carried home a potato each in their backpacks. They also sampled zucchini, lemon cucumbers, and baby lettuce. This little urban vegetable farm grows fifty different types of produce for 30 CSA families and local restaurants. It is also a farming apprenticeship program through OSU extension. Farmer Jen also introduced them to many different kinds of bees busy gathering pollen from all the flowers on site. After our farm exploration we walked across the street to Brentwood Park for lunch. The picnic tables happened to be by a sand volleyball court–KC enthusiastically let everyone else bury him in the sand.

Our First Ever Bike Field Trip

By Laura

Today a group of parents, teachers and graduates biked to the plant nursery where we were met by other graduates and their families. We gathered plants for our pollinator garden and brought them back to The Commons.

(p. s. We missed you LDB! Hope you had a wonderful birthday!)

Gracious Company

By Laura

“We have nothing to fear and a great deal to learn from trees, that vigorous and pacific tribe which without stint produces strengthening essences for us, soothing balms, and in whose gracious company we spend so many cool, silent and intimate hours.”
