Today we started our clay self portraits. I asked the children to feel their faces. We felt our cheeks, our chins, our lips, our noses, our ears, our forehead and everywhere in between. I asked, “What part of your face bumps out?” and “What part of your face sinks in?” We talked about how building your self portrait with clay is different from the drawing self portraits we did earlier in the year. We not only have to look at the shape and size of our features but the depth as well. Each child started with a slab of clay and more clay that could be used to add 3 dimensional features.
