Valentine’s Day is for everyone

In an effort to spread love and kindness throughout our school community and beyond, we made Valentine’s for our families, and also for the people who inhabit Right to Dream Too, a local non profit organization that gives shelter and a safe place to sleep for unhoused people. Along with our friends at Tulip Tree Preschool, we donated cards and baked goods to the R2D2!

I started each project with a question; who do you love? Many children immediately shouted out “my mom! my dad!” and some children included a sibling “Baby Will!” said LS. “Olive, my cat” exclaimed CRG. So by answering the question perhaps the children realized that there are a lot of people to love out there in the world.

We talked a bit about Valentine’s Day, and some of the older children told me they were “going to get a present, or going to get candy”. We talked a bit about how Valentine’s day is also about celebrating all of the people that we love, and how one way to do that would be to make a card with a kind message on it. We talked about how we were going to make cards for our families, but also for people who might not have a home, or a family, so they know that our caring extends to them.

Love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.
